Famous visit

editorial image

IT’S not all too often that schools in the Dales get a visit from a world-class celebrity.

Back in the 1980’s, however, sporty youngsters at Lady Manners School, Bakewell, received a rather glamorous visitor in the form of athlete Suzanne Dando.

Suzanne was extremely well known at the time owing to her role as captain of the British Ladies gymnastic team.

The reason she was visiting was to encourage 550 youngsters to take part in the school’s contribution towards raising funds for the 1984 Olympics.

And owing to how captivated the pupils seem as they look at Suzanne – it’s safe to assume the youngsters did take part.
