A picturesque village will come alive during its annual carnival week – with a range of exciting events for all ages.
A packed entertainment programme has been organised for Winster Wakes Carnival 2009, from June 28 to July 4.

On Sunday, Laura-Beth Gilbert will be crowned Carnival Queen at 2.30pm outside Winster Market House, followed by a church service, tea and
a brass band concert. In the evening there is a treasure hunt on foot around Winster, starting at 6pm at the Miners' Standard.

An exhibition of paintings by Dales artists with music by the Steve Salfield Duo will be held in the church from 6pm to 8pm on Tuesday, with traditional storytelling and music in the Miners' Standard afterwards.

The main public event will be held on Wednesday at 7.30pm in Winster Church, with a performance by DaleDiva women's chorus and harmony quartet Farenheit. Tickets cost £5 from 01629 650090 or £6 on the door.

Over 70 runners are expected to enter Winster Hill Race on Thursday,
starting at 7.30pm outside the Market House.

The climax is Saturday's Wakes Day , starting with a fancy dress and brass band parade at 1.30pm. This will be followed by children's entertainment, morris and sword dancing, Chesterfield Spirettes, tug-of-wars, rides, games, refreshments and a hog roast.

The evening entertainment starts with a family get-together in the marquee, followed by a rock night featuring Chaser and The Fuse, who will bring the festivities to a close.
