Walkers will celebrate the fifth year of an annual Peak District festival this month, with over 100 activities planned for the ten-day event.
There will be something for people of all ages and abilities during the Peak District Walking Festival, from short family storytelling walks to long, gruelling moorland marches.
This year's event – running from Saturday April 25 to Monday May 4 –
will include a wide range of guided walks with local experts. Themes will include food, drink, ghosts, heritage and geology.
Highlights include a three-mile stomp around Monsal Dale on Saturday April 25, led by a traditional storyteller. This walk – called Black Dogs and Soaky Pobs after traditional Dales legends – will visit the valley's numerous caves and recount tall tales about their former inhabitants.
On Tuesday April 28 walkers will descend on Stanton Moor for a six-mile walk to take in the moor's ancient monuments. They will meet opposite the Red Lion in Birchover at 10am.
For experienced walkers there will be a range of 'grough-stuff' walks, with higher-mileage jaunts to remote beauty spots.
Warm waterproof clothing and walking boots are essential for all the events. Packed lunches, maps and compasses may be needed on some longer walks.
Organisers have encouraged festival-goers to consider using public transport to reach events, with details of buses and trains included in the timetables.
