The Y Not Festival is launching its first battle of the bands competition for the summer.
More than 200 entries were received for the 60 places which will see bands battle it out for the chance to open Y Not Festival 2008.

First round heats are set to run from May 30 through to June 20 at venues including Belper Town football Club on
June 6 and 20.

The festival itself runs from August 1 to August 3 at Pikehall, near Matlock.

The competition panel consists of two judges, and one combined peoples' vote. The band who claims the most votes wins.

There are ten heats in the first round and the winner from each heat will go through to the semi finals. Two finalists will be selected from each semi final to go through to the grand final. The winner of the final will open Y Not Festival 2008 on August 1.

Entry for the competition has now closed but all events are open to the public and the organisers are promising some special performances.

Festival organiser Ralph Broadbent said "We're really keen to promote local talent in the area and offering the chance to play alongside the likes of the Frank Turner and the Mystery Jets is the perfect way to do this. By September we're hoping to have put on over 80 local bands in one summer."

Headliners for this year's Y Not Festival are confirmed as Frank Turner, The Mystery Jets and Hijak Oscar.
