Quick-thinking nine-year-old Andrew Taylor saved the life of his young friend Neil Worth when he was trapped and sinking in sludge in a 17-feet deep filter bed.

Andrew grabbed a nearby pole and called to him to hold it while he slowly dragged him back to safety.

The pair had been playing at Wirksworth’s Derby Road sewage works in the 1970s, with friends.

Andrew, of King George Street, Wirksworth, received a severe ticking off for dirtying his clothes before his mother realised how brave he had been.
