Here’s a bustling, colourful snapshot of days-gone-by in Matlock’s Crown Square but can you work out when it was taken?
The photograph shows the impressive Crown Hotel. This was built prior to 1899 and is now a building society and shop.
The entrance to Bank Road from Crown Square is framed by the hotel to one side and Crown Buildings to the other.
Crown Square underwent major transformation last year and the town’s centre piece roundabout now looks very different from the one pictured here.
Shops have changed too over the years, and the area where Broughtons and Yeomans now stands has altered dramatically. In many ways, however the town’s focal point is still a historic land mark and similar to this image from the past.
