The home guards were posted on Matlock Station approach and had access to an old railway carriage for resting. They also guarded the Slack Hill area and a shed at a farm on Slack Hill. The shed can still be seen in the shape of a sentry box.

The home guards were conveyed there by the soldiers billeted at the Whitworth Institute in Darley Dale.
