A QUICK-THINKING lorry driver averted disaster in 1986.

The lorry’s brakes failed sending the vehicle hurtling down the one-in-four gradient on Chesterfield Road in Matlock.

David Parkes deliberately drove the 32-tonner in to the Presentation Convent boundary wall in an effort to stop it.

Fortunately no one was injured on the busy road.

The photograph was taken by former Mercury photographer Ron Duggins.

It shows Sister Esther and Sister Joseph supplying tea and biscuits to the lorry driver and police officers as they waited for recovery help to arrive.
