This smiling group of men looked happy in their work at the former Lehane, Mackenzie and Shand Limited, in Rowsley.

Pictured here in the firm’s plant yard, is John Gladwin, Len Spencer, Martin Clark, Keith Cantrill, Steve Woodhouse and David Saunders. Kneeling at the front is Alan Fletcher.

The photograph was taken in September 1969 at the site that is now the shopping centre, Peak Village.

Keith Cantrill, who sent in the photograph, was at the time training as an apprentice with a group of other young lads.

Len Spencer – Mercury reporter Julia Rodgerson’s grandad – was a low loader driver, at the plant hire company.

Mr Cantrill, of Wirksworth, left the firm when he was 22 and went to work for Tarmac.

He said: “I look back very fondly on those days.

“We were like a big happy family.”
