MATLOCK Rugby Club skipper Chris Roome endured 12 extraordinary hospital-filled hours in the 1980s.

The first team leader settled down for an evening after being released from hospital following an operation on a broken leg.

However, just three hours later his pregnant wife went into labour nine days early and had to be rushed to Chesterfield Hospital, with Chris by her side.

Following the birth of his daughter, Sarah-Jane Elizabeth, he tried to pass on the good news with a phone call but tripped over his crutches, smashed his hand through a window and ended up being admitted to casualty with a badly lacerated finger.
