This picture from 1993 shows Derbyshire County Council’s head commissionaire Irwin Hardy retiring after 33 years with the authority.

Mr Hardy worked at County Offices in Matlock in 1960 as a porter. In 1970 he trained as a Rolls-Royce driver and became the authority’s official chauffeur.

In that role he drove MPs, VIPs of stage and screen and royalty when they visited Derbyshire.

He is pictured with his wife Jean receiving gifts from county council chairman Jock McKay.
