The boys from Darley Churchtown Primary School had just won the Bunting Cup when this picture was taken in 1958.

Goalkeeper John Falder, who still lives in Matlock, kept the photo in his safe hands and brought it to show the Mercury last week.

The boys had beaten local rivals Tansley Primary School in the final to take the trophy.

John recalls he played a starring role in the match by saving a penalty.

“I was a hero that day,” he said.

The boys, who were aged 10 or 11 at the time, used to train at the Whitworth Institute in Darley Dale.

They played together for several seasons before heading off to separate secondary schools.

The players in the photo are: (back row, from left) Ralph Vardy, Len Spencer, Peter White, Barry Boam, John Falder, Steve Williams and coach Olwyn Corfield; (front row, from left) David Pink, David Pownall, Richard Johnson (captain), Bruce Woodhouse and Michael Bradbury.
