Despite opposition from villagers the axe loomed large over Birchover School.

Claims by the county council that the five-pupil establishment was not viable were challenged by parents and MP Patrick McLoughlin advised the action committee to send a written statement to the Secretary of State for Education.

Headteacher Mrs Winifred Woodward had been at the tiny school for 20 years, but said she was sad at the prospect of closure, claiming the four girls and one boy would have to travel nearly three miles to Stanton School.
