Carnival queens in the 1930s

Another photograph from the 1930s. This time it’s a group of village carnival queens in September 1935.

The photograph was taken in Hall Leys Park and shows from left to right Queen of Elton Dorothy Heathcote, Darley Dale’s Ivy Holland (the cup winner), Youlgrave’s Marie Wardle, Tansley’s Harriet Gregory, Wirksworth’s Constance Bratby, Winster’s Miss Flowers and the attendants to each queen.

Elton’s queen won the handsome Loving Cup after the group paraded round the band stand to be judged.

Carnival royalty has always been an important part of village life and as this picture shows the queens were always decked out in elegant gowns with huge bouquets of flowers.
