MIDFIELDER Ian Clarke has made a surprise deadline day return to Matlock Town.

Clarke suffered a serious cruciate ligament injury at home to Prescot Cables in April 2006, having scored Matlock's first two goals in that game.

It proved to be his last appearance and the playmaker left Causeway Lane when his contract expired at the end of the 2006/07 season when there were doubts over his long-term fitness.

But he began his comeback in earnest at the start of this campaign, training with Blue Square North side Gainsborough Trinity, managed by ex-Gladiator Steve Charles.

Having re-established contact with Matlock, Clarke played in a friendly for the first team on Wednesday night against the Gladiators U19 and reserve team.

It is understood he has signed on a non-contract basis until the end of the season.

Matlock have also confirmed the signing of striker Jason Hardy, who also played in Wednesday's 5-0 win for the first team.
