An ugly monster

Madam,
I was appalled when I confronted the newly-installed footbridge at Matlock railway station.
It is a big black ugly monster which is totally impractical and will be a blot on Matlock for years to come.

The appearance of this crude structure is outrageous, it blocks any views of the station approach and it has no style.

It is neither Vi
ctorian or modern, more like a throwback to the worst of the sixties architecture.

It restricts access to the railway station and reduces the amount of car parking.

It will have little use for those it is intended for and will just become a harbour for litter.

The zigzag design is incredible, it will probably be quicker to go via Snitterton Road, it does not even have access to the northbound station platform.

It will be a real trek to Sainsbury's and is so unnecessary when a simple level crossing at the north end of the station would have been cheap and simple and of far more use.

The planners have got this one wrong big time and it is us that will have to suffer it for many years.

If this bridge was needed at all then at least a bit of style and flair could have been used to create something in which we could be proud rather than ashamed of.

I get the impression that the whole project has been done on the cheap and, if this bridge is typical, then I dread to think what will become of Crown Square.

Please take this bridge away and we will manage without it.

M Marchant
Matlock.
