However, the fact is the ugly and useless footbridge and the ludicrous pergola, which have featured in recent editions of the Mercury, are not the supermarket's fault.
Sainsbury's originally had quite sensibly proposed a free-standing footbridge l
iking the public car park with the store site.
It was Matlock Civic Association who applied pressure to get the footbridge moved to its present site (if you want to know why, you will have to ask them).
It was also the Matlock Civic Association who "agreed" the pergola.
Quite how the civic
association had the clout to get the footbridge moved or the authority to "agree" anything without consulting the residents directly affected is a mystery, but there you go.
It is also the case that Sainsbury's was encouraged by the district council to design the footpath off Snitterton Road so that it was effectively an entrance to Sainsbury's store.
The district council told Sainsbury's that the Snitterton Road entrance was "only 300 yards from Crown Square, so it would qualify as a town centre entrance..."So if you want someone to blame for ruining the approach to the train station and putting an entrance to a supermarket in what will be a sleepy cul-de-sac in a conservation area, look no further than our local good old boys and girls.
