Joining protest about bridge

Madam,
While I am generally supportive of the Cawdor Development I feel compelled to join the growing chorus of protest about the monstrous pedestrian footbridge for the following reasons:
1) The bridge, and particularly the ramp, is disproportionately large and out of scale resulting in its ugly domination of the surrounding area.

2) It destroys the attractive approach to the traditional station building which has the Station maste
r's house on one side and the fine stone bank building in full view on the other.

3) The ramp obstructs and almost certainly prevents the passage of traffic into and out of the station yard by this route.

4) The area under the ramp will be dark and damp and will undoubtedly become a litter trap or worse.

I fully recognise that there should be a ramp for disabled and push chair users, but why such a massive and ugly construction with supports, which are closer to those of an oil rig?

Would it not be possible for the descending ramp, with appropriate safety landings, to follow round the wall rather than double back, and could it not be mounted on strong slender supports?

Alternatively could there be a dedicated and protected path up Snitterton Road behind the bank where it would meet the top of the new footbridge?

After all Snitterton Road will be a short no through road with access only for a few local cars and certainly no lorries.

This area from Matlock Bridge to the transport interchange was supposed to be an attractive and welcoming public space entrance to the new development and Sainsbury's.

This could still be the case providing the planners and Sainsbury's respond flexibly and imaginatively to the growing public concern.

The suggestions in Tony Symes letter make a lot of sense. Also, I wonder if a bridge across from the top of the new bus station was ever considered, with a vertical lift to it from inside the bus station? Wheelchairs/pushchairs would then have the option of using the lift or going up Snitterton Road. However, if the existing bridge is kept, why not block in the underneath by building stone walls to match the existing wall behind it. This would have a double benefit - it would hide the ugly supports and would also prevent the possibility of unsocial behaviour underneath the bridge.
