The main parties were out in force knocking on doors, noting who had or hadn't voted and phoning those who hadn't voted and offering lifts to the polling stations. As an independent candidate fighting his first campaign my resources and political sav
y were a little more limited.
The votes I received should however give the other parties food for thought when laying out their priorities.
Over 20 per cent of the electorate who exercised their right to vote voted for a relatively little known, relatively new to the area shopkeeper with no political or council experience.
This suggests that 20 per cent-plus people in the area who voted are less than happy with the way the councils and councillors have served them in recent times. Switching on the Christmas lights or showing people around the flower beds in the park are important in their own way but there are many more important challenges facing the town including car parking and promotion.
I congratulate the newly-elected councillors, they are good sincere people and I hope and believe they will take up the challenges facing us.
Good luck Cate and Ian.
