Madam,
Thank you for publishing a report about the budget and work of the Peak District National Park Authority, "Peak Park awarded increase in grant funding from government" (Mercury, February 11).
I just wish to clarify one point. The grant for the authority's main budget comes completely from the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and not through council tax.
In the past, some of the funding for national park authorities came through local councils using money from central government.
Seven years ago Defra decided it was more efficient to give the grant directly to National Park Authorities.
Unfortunately, some older websites still have details of the previous funding system on them.
The Peak District National Park Authority has a strong record in attracting additional funding from other bodies to supplement our Defra grant.
The two projects highlighted in your story – the £5.5million Moorlife project to restore peat moorlands and the £2.25million Pedal Peak District to improving cycling facilities and opportunities – are examples of this.
