Madam,
If Rosemary Jones of Grasmere is either visually-impaired or intellectually-challenged may I apologise for the tone of this letter at the outset (Restaurants disappointed, letters 07/01).
Why if she requires a restaurant did she choose to eat in two pubs, one chip shop and a hotel? Would she seek haute couture at a jumble sale or a BMW in a Lada dealership?
Did her researches stretch to the internet? A Google search for "restaurants bakewell" yielded nine results within walking distance of the roundabout, including Felicini on Coombs Road, which is excellent, and Piedaniels on Bath Street, which is one of the best restaurants I have ever visited (and I get about).
Their lunchtime menu is an absolute steal!
I have no doubt that Bakewell has some dire eating establishments but, in my experience, no more than anywhere else, including, I suspect, Grasmere.
The way to avoid disappointment is to do your research properly on the premises (there are many telltale signs, believe me) and if in doubt, walk out.
But above all, if you require a restaurant, visit one!
