During recent consultation events in Matlock, members of the Matlock Area Climate Action Forum have discussed the wind farm proposal with hundreds of people, mostly residents of Matlock and the surrounding villages.
Unlike your correspondent who
referred to us as dangerous, the people
we spoke to see climate change as the source of danger and they were sufficiently knowledgeable on the subject to have made their own minds up that they support the wind farm.
Another correspondent suggests it's undemocratic that people who won't be effected by the development think that they have a right to express their opinion.
We will all be effected by climate change, those who would and would not be able to see the turbines from their homes and those who visit the Matlock area, so surely we all have a right to support positive action to tackle the issue.
The suggestion that tourists will stop coming to the area because of the wind farm is bogus, like many residents the visitors we spoke to describe turbines as graceful or beautiful and confirmed they would not be deterred from visiting. Rather than deter tourists, many existing wind farms are themselves tourist attractions.
I urge your readers to find out more by viewing the planning application on Derbyshire Dales and North East Derbyshire District Councils' web sites where they can also register their views once you've made their minds. The World Wildlife Fund, Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace have a joint web site which 'debunks' many of the supposedly scientific claims being put forwards by those opposed to wind farms.
We have yet to hear what those opposed to the wind farm are doing to counter climate change, perhaps they could tell their children and grandchildren, as it's they who will suffer or benefit depending on how we all act.
Everything we do to counter climate change helps. We have the power – if not us, then who? And if not now, then when?
