COUNCILLORS have slammed highways chiefs' plan to make the whole of Matlock town centre a 20mph zone – branding it farcical, crazy and impractical.
The proposal would limit drivers to 20mph on the roads leading from Crown Square to Bank Road Post Office, Causeway Lane roundabout, the Dimple and the Boat House pub on Dale Road.

Matlock Town Council voted on Monday to object to the county counc
il idea, which would also make the Derwent Way relief road 40mph.

Cllr David Barker said: "Initially I thought this was a good idea and was a compromise to make Crown Square more pedestrian-friendly.

"But to restrict the whole of the town centre to 20mph is farcical. And Derwent Way will go to 20mph, then 40mph, then 30mph.

"Do you know any town in Britain who has this? It's absolutely crazy."
Cllr Martin Burfoot said 14 new street signs would be needed, rubbishing authorities' aim of reducing street clutter in Matlock.

He said: "It's ironic they've never in all these years considered 20mph speed limits for places like Starkholmes and Wellington Street, then they've brought this in where you couldn't drive very fast any way during the day.

"It's amazing how slow 20mph is – it's an absolute crawl. This will encourage more people, younger motorists in particular, to use Starkholmes.

"It's not practical and will cause confusion and annoyance to motorists," Cllr Burfoot added.

The town council requested evidence to prove the scheme was justified, necessary and workable.

Derbyshire County Council said it was in the "very early stages" of consultation and wanted to hear people's views.

A spokesman said: "This is all part of the plans linked in with the Sainsbury's development.

"These are only proposals and we will be asking for comments from the public on them before making any decisions.

"Once the consultation closes on February 5, we take all the comments into consideration and prepare a report to go to our cabinet members."

A timescale has yet to be set for the work to be carried out.

I hope this is a non-starter. It would mean as you travel through Matlock from Artists Corner, going at 40, then 20 along Dale Rd, then 40along relief road, then 20 to the Dimple, then 30(or is it 40?can't remember) from there. Ridiculous. I just don't think it's necessary, as 30 doesn't seem excessive to me, if people stick to it.

Why do Matlock residents have to pay £250,000 a year for this lot!

Both councillors are members of the Matlock Civic Association that supports a 20mph limit. In fact, in many ways, Cllr Burfoot IS the Civic Association.

How's that for facing both ways?

I don't want to see so many alterations to the limit on short stretches of road but, Cllr Burfoot, it works in my hometown of Warrington over a large area around the town centre.

Have you not seen the "Twenty's Plenty" signs? Do you object to the limit or the signs?

I think that the proposed 20mph speed limit in the centre of Matlock is an excellent idea, as long as it is enforced.

As a pedestrian, I have been involved in too many near-misses. I dice with death every time I cross the road in town, even at pedestrian crossings (people often ignore the red lights).

Let's restore the balance and give pedestrians a fighting chance. Bring on the 20mph limit - the sooner the better!

Absolute madness - i have recently driven through Leytonstone (where they have a shared space concept) all that you get is idiots with prams pushing them in the way of vehicles, even expecting a bus to stop on a sixpence. Sensible speed limits yes but not some 20 - 40 - 20 limit - or is it way of fleecing more speeding fines out of motorists. Don't forget road users pay more taxes than most in the form of road tax, insurance tax, fuel tax etc - so shouldn't they have a say

i think that you will find that we have a right to be safe in our town without fear of being mown down. I drive but dont mind slowing down What is the urgency to get to places in a nano second.? I think you will find that road taxes etc go towards the road repairs and funding of wages to fund dlva, road signs, drainage, environmental research to halt pollution, etc and all other measures for road use. So please stop saying that pedestrians do not have a voice as we pay rates and taxes like everyone else. I didnt say you didnt have an opinion just try and get an informed one

I wouldnt worry about it. By the time they get around to doing anything we will all be driving around in our hover-cars and the roads will be completely traffic free.

It'll be the birds that have to watch out then!!!!!

And road users don't pay rates / taxes etc. Not evryone drives like a moron, its just that road users are vilified for causing all that is wrong in the world - road deaths, pollution etc. If it wasn't for the car many many people in the Derbyshire Dales would not get to work - if i had to use public transport it would be lunchtime before i got to work and as for coming back forget it. Maybe if DDDC / DCC provided more subsidies for public transport there would be less cars on the road. Don't forget pedestrians as result of their own stupidity get killed in RTA's

Okay if you want this then you are moron for behaving in a complete irresponsible manner in advocating deaths of individuals as stupidity because of cars running them over. What a heartless and utterly barbaric response. End of conversation .
