Big cats could be prowling a Dales town after a 'shocked' cyclist claims he was confronted by a huge animal crossing the road in front of his bike.
Adam Gladwin, 28, of Matlock, said he saw the large black cat in Darley Dale while he was on his way to work.

He said the animal crossed the road from the Whitworth Park area at around 5am on Sunday October 11.

Mr Gladwin said: "It was as plain as day, straight in front of me. It was as big as a German Shepherd dog with a long black tail. It was only 35 to 40 yards away.

"I was unsure whether to keep going. I called in to the paper shop and told them what I'd seen and they said there had been other sightings in the area."

It is understood that there have been other sightings of large cats at Northwood Lane in Darley Dale.

Mr Gladwin added: "Some people are a bit sceptical and some people belief me. I've also heard that the creature has been going in the bins at DFS.

"As far as I'm concerned, it was a big cat. There is no other explanation."

Have you seen any big cats in the Dales? Let us know your thoughts below.

Paul Westwood, of Big Cat Monitors, the UK website dedicated to big cat sightings, said Derbyshire was a very popular place for sightings.

"The original cats from the 70s – when the Government introduced legislation to stop people keeping them – would have died out now but it is easy for people to illegally import cubs. It is a status thing but when they get too big people realise they can't handle them. The Derbyshire countryside is an ideal location for them."

Mr Westwood said the latest sighting sounded like a leopard or jaguar.
l On Friday at 5pm a man reported a sighting of a large puma-like cat with a long tail in a field at Idridgehay.

A Derbyshire police spokeswoman said this year they had received four reports of big cat sightings in the Peak District and Dales.

The only thing I'm scared of when walking around the countryside is bumping into one of these nutters who keep mistaking kittens for leopards! Get a grip! :-)

"It was the size of a German Shepherd dog with a long black tail".

Maybe, just maybe, it was a German Shepherd dog with a long black tail!

If a big cat was around, there would be reports of dead sheep etc. A large black stray dog would go foraging in bins. Draw your own conclusion.

I am glad to see that the comments so far are realistic. I was beginning to think you Brits were going off the deep end with your BP sightings. Adam G. saw a dog. The track in the above photo is a dog track. (Large toes, bilobed heel pad, claw marks). It sure is a biggy.

I don't know why they keep putting that dog print from Black Rock up and say its a cat. It was pointed out at the time of the original article that its a dog print.

You can all laugh, i have photo proof of similar prints in the snow except that they were 3.5-4" across. The same prints were on the top of a 4ft high fence, explain what a dog was doing up there then people? We also got a sample of faeces that was similar to a normal cat but 10x larger.
Sent them into the MM but they weren't published. I'll stick them on my site and put the link here for reference once i've uploaded the pics.

I'm not saying that there aren't big cats knocking about. I'm just saying that the picture on this page is a dog foot print.

Why do the Matlock Mercury insist upon writing such nonsense. It is clear that it is either a made up story or total confusion from the cyclist. The dangerous animals act came into being in 1976. Many big cats were believed to have been set free to spark these stories. Any animal still surviving from this time would be over 33 years old, which would be a very good age for such an animal living in perhaps a zoo, receiving the best care and food, but impossible in the wild. Maybe they are breading?...again impossible. These people should stop sending in nonsense stories and concentrate on facts.
