GOLD coins belonging to a Whatstandwell man who died last year have sold for a small fortune at auction.
The collection, which belonged to the late Martin Roach, who died in October, aged 48, was sold at an antique and collectors' sale on Thursday, January 21, hosted by Hanson's Auctioneers in Derby.

Charles Hanson, manager of Hansons Auctioneers said: "The collection was quite special for the quantity of good gold sovereigns and related gold coins."

Mr Hanson said the sale had gone better than expected and Mr Roach's parents had been pleased with the outcome.

He added: "We had a great sale for the client, every coin went and the collection made a few thousand pounds.

"It was a fitting send off for Martin."

Two of the gold coins sold for over £1,000 and many sovereigns in the sale from Queen Victoria's reign later sold for up to £150 each.

Mr Hanson said: "We had hundreds of people for the auction. Gold is at record value at the moment and that was reflected in the price."
