Reckless youths riding around the streets on mini-motos could face having their bikes destroyed, police warn.
Following a craze for the high-powered miniature motorbikes, Wirksworth Safer Neighbourhood Team has been receiving complaints from residents about teenagers buzzing around the town dangerously.
The force has now seized three bikes which are set to be crushed.
Pc Doug Eyre said: "Last weekend we received several calls about mini-motos and their riders speeding around Anthony Gell sports field and other footpaths.
"Wirksworth Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team has listened to the public concerns and I am pleased to say that we have now seized the mini-motos and they will be destroyed."
Police warn that while mini-motos are becoming increasingly popular, many parents are unaware of how dangerous they can be.
PCSO Sue Lester said elderly people and young children were at risk of being hit by speeding bikes which although marketed as 'toys' can travel at up to 60mph.
She added: "They are getting a lot faster and more powerful and that is encouraging more people to get them.
"Someone could get seriously injured and we have got concerns about them being used at night. They are often riden around the back alley-ways because it is a good circuit but it can be difficult to get out of the way in time. They do go fast and are often difficult to catch.
"Residents have also complained about the noise. They sound a bit like a hedge cutter but double the sound which can be annoying for people who live in these areas."
Police warn it is illegal to drive the bikes on parks, footpaths or playing fields and unless the vehicle is taxed, licensed, insured and ridden by someone over 16 they should not be on roads.
