Fire broke out at Whitworth Hospital in Darley Dale on Thursday at 9am.

Fire crews were called after an electric meter caught fire in the main switch room.

Whitworth Hospital matron Wilma Hulland said: "No patients were at any risk during the incident, and power is currently being supplied by the hospital's generators while we wait for the electricity board to come in and fix the meter.

"The only thing that might be affected is dinner – which might be half an hour late," she added.

A fire service spokesman said the fire started in electrical cabling and took 15 minutes to extinguish.

Derbyshire County PCT said they were taking the incident very seriously and would conduct an investigation to see if hospital staff had responded in an "appropriate and effective" manner.
