FUNDS raised from a walk in memory of Wirksworth student Katie Taylor who died of skin cancer have been handed over to charity.
Katie's Midnight Walk was organised by Anthony Gell pupil Katie and took place four days after the 15-year-old's death from malignant melanoma in June.

Her parents and friends have presented a cheque for £8,075 to Harry Townsend of the Myfanwy Townsend Melanoma Research Fund.

Her mum Alison said a total of 157 walkers had trekked five miles during the midnight walk and it is now hoped the event will take place each year.

Alsion said: "We are hoping it will become a nationwide event, already friends of Katie are organising walks in Derbyshire, Cornwall and Wales."

Another cheque presented in memory of Katie came from the Lime Kiln pub in Wirksworth which raised funds through a rock concert and bungee jump.

Other events taking place in memory of Katie, who lived in Leabrooks near Alfreton, included a sponsored bike ride from Lands End to John O Groats, an open garden party with a local brass band at 75 The Dale, Wirksworth on September 6, and a wine and wisdom night organised by Katie's friends Susan, Pauline and Carys Williams to raise funds for a memorial bench.

Alison added: "Katie was a well liked, popular girl who always thought of others."
