Ferry passengers face long delays after council chiefs revealed a £20,000 boat project may not hit the water until next year.
The Matlock Bath river ferry project has been plagued by setbacks since its launch was delayed due to high river levels in summer 2007.

Then problems emerged with its winch mechanism during its maiden voyage in March.

And now there will be a further wait for the first paying passengers to board, after adjustments to the chain system and work to the landing platforms took longer than expected.

Derbyshire Dales District Council admitted it was disappointed to have missed the busy easter holidays and most of the summer season.

Dave Brooks, planning and development services director, said: "Following initial river trials of the ferry it was determined that improvements could be made to the landing stages to improve the ferry's operation.

"The district council is disappointed at the delays but the improvement works have now been completed," Mr Brooks said.

The hand-operated ferry was due to open in March and form the final link in the award-winning Matlock Parks Project.

But the problems were obvious as it struggled over the 15-metre crossing between Derwent Gardens and Lovers Walk back in March.

And it may be too late for the Matlock river ferry to launch again this year.

Mr Brooks added: "No decision has yet been arrived at, but it is now necessary to consider whether the ferry will be brought into operation for the remainder of this season, or if the service is now to be launched in 2009."

A hand-powered boat linked Lovers Walk and Derwent Gardens up until the 1950s.

The new boat design was designed by naval architects McCaig and Napier based on the traditional 1950s river ferry.

It will carry up to eight passengers, but the district council has confirmed wheelchairs will not be allowed on board.
