Matlock super-surgery plans on hold

Plans to build a super-surgery in the Dales have been put on hold while health chiefs gather residents' opinions.
The proposals, drawn up by Matlock GP Peter Holden last year, would see The Imperial Road Group, Lime Grove Medical Centre and Darley Dale Medical Centre surgeries relocated to the Whitworth Hospital.

However developments have been postponed in light of a radical review of health services in Derbyshire when residents will have the chance to say how they want services to change.

Dr Holden, based at the Imperial Road Surgery, said the super-surgery plans had got past the Primary Care Trust and were still on the agenda.
He added: "I think in the long run it is inevitable and it will secure the future of the Whitworth Hospital.

"At the moment the project is on hold because there are too many
unknowns."

He said one of the practices was not prepared to commit to the move until some issues were resolved.

Lime Grove practice manager Wendy Sandner said patients would soon be asked their opinions on extended surgery opening hours, as part of the overall health review.

She said plans for a new health campus at the Whitworth could mean transport problems for some patients.

She added: "I think there is a benefit in surgeries being where patient are and if patients have to travel more is it more beneficial to them?"
Health minister Lord Darzi who is conducting the NHS review, said so-called polyclinics, which house GPs alongside medical services normally offered at hospitals, are better suited to patients needs.

A PCT spokesperson said discussions had been held last year about the possibility of a new health campus at Darley Dale.

She added: "The PCT will be publishing and seeking views of local people on its vision for health services across Derbyshire in May 2008.

"Then, during the remainder of 2008 and into the future, we will develop clear service plans on which we will consult with all local patients and other interested parties and these will include plans relating to the Matlock area."

Mustapha Go,

MATLOCK 20/03/2008 13:54:37
Here we go again...why is it whenever anything that will benefit the residents of this Town is proposed it always meets with problems...17years for a supermarket..Leisure Centre taking just about as long..
In the meantime Chesterfield Town Centre gets rebuilt, Bakewell Town Centre and Agricultural Centre built, Westfield at Derby gets knocked up in the time it takes a study group to convene on any improvement proposal affecting Matlock...
We don't need study groups and working committees to tells us that we need Medical Centres, Leisure Centres and many more facilities most towns take for granted...the Council tax paying public of Matlock know this but still we keep paying for hikes in taxes and see nothing for it..except fewer and poorer services..when was the last time anyone saw a Traffic warden on Wellington Street..which now resembles a lorry park....
It really is time these councils extracted their heads from the sand and delivered the goods for all the money we have to throw at them each year...!!!!!

Mustapha Go,

While you make some excellent points about the terrible way Matlock is being treated over the past few years, by particulary the District Council, (and if you think the lack of services and cuts are bad now, you're going to be utterly dismayed by how bad it's going to get, with their need to cut millions of pounds from their budget).

However you have failed to mention two of the key negative points about relocating everything to the Whitworth Hospital. Not everyone drives and not everyone is fully mobile. That means it would be much more difficult for many people to get to the doctor's surgery.

Additionally rather than having a local service where your doctor knows you and your family, and has experience of your needs, it would become a non personal service where you you may never be guaranteed of seeing the same doctor twice in a row. Hardly ideal really.

Finally, much as I hate to give this District Council any leeway, they had absolutely nothing to do with this decision. That is made clear in the news article. as well

How strange, the same Primary Care Trust is to put in one of the new "Darzi" health centres in at the Ilkeston Hospital site, which no one has asked for, and isnt needed, and there is to be no consultation with patients at all.

Its all being done in an huge rush, and has to be opened by the end of the year.

It couldnt be that Erewash is a marginal labour seat, and Matlock is firmly Tory, and we have an election due sometime soon, could it?

Until locals accept that Matlock, Matlock Bath, Darley Dale and ALL surrounding areas need to pool resources, this area will never progress.
