CHARGES to see Matlock Bath's illuminations could be bad news for charities and traffic, according to regular visitors.

Derbyshire Dales District Council will this year introduce a £3 entry charge to all adult visitors of the popular spectacle, which features firework displays and the Venetian Nights boat parade.

But some say the move could harm attendance to the
annual tradition – and will further hamper the busy flow of traffic.
In previous years, voluntary contributions could be made towards the running of the event.

One Matlock resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "It's the way of the world isn't it?

"You pay for everything twice. Things like this are taken into account for council tax, and then you pay again on the entrance.

"I can see the payment and change transactions slowing everybody down even more."

Another person added: "It's not a lot of money is it?

"I would pay it because it is a good event to see. It may affect the takings of the charities that collect there though."

Dave Brooks, head of planning and development at Derbyshire Dales District Council, said: "It was agreed last year that we would charge this time around.

"The council is under constant pressure in terms of budgeting. The Illuminations is an expensive event although very popular, so we looked at various options including sponsorship.

"We think a charge will mean we can keep the same quality and length of the event.

"Before the council took over the illuminations, it was run by a private company and there were charges.

"We will wait and see the effect on customer attendance, and hope it is not detrimental.

"There will still be no charge for children.

"As part of the parks project, improvements will be made to the entrance and exit points which should help relieve some of the traffic pressures."
