A 23-year-old Matlock man became abusive in town store after being asked to prove he was old enough to buy booze.
Chesterfield magistrates heard that tighter checks were being carried out on the age of customers buying alcohol at Somerfield store, Matlock.

Michael Gregory went into the supermarket at 5.30pm on February 23 and tried to buy a bottle of vodka.

"He was asked for I.D. and he said he didn't need any as he was 23," said Becky Mahon, prosecuting.

"He was told there would be no sale if he didn't provide it."

Ms Mahon told the court that Gregory had also repeatly verbally abused the supermarket manager.

He was arrested and told police he had 'over-reacted' because of the alcohol he had drunk earlier that day.

Gregory, of Masson Hill View, Matlock, admitted using threatening or insulting words or behaviour.

He had previous convictions for violence, drunk and disorderly behaviour and failing to provide a breath specimen for analysis.

"It's not a good record. Clearly you have had trouble in the past because of drink," said presiding magistrate Peter Greaves, fining him £165, with £60 costs.

Gregory told the court: "I can't really remember a lot. I was really drunk.

"I had just got a job and I went out and got absolutely hammered."
