MATLOCK could be in line for a £75million development after plans for a hotel, cinema, car showrooms and offices were unveiled.
An application to extensively revitalise Halldale Quarry, off Snitterton Road, has been submitted and town councillors welcomed the scheme at a meeting on Monday.

Cllr Barrie Tipping said: "I think we should be welcoming a scheme like this and saying let's get on with it, let's get it done and bring Matlock in to the 21st Century. It is an imaginative scheme that will benefit the town."

Cllr Steve Flitter added: "This is the type of scheme we wanted for Cawdor and what did we end up with? We have got a chance to put that right."

The plans submitted by Halldale Properties Limited could see a multiplex cinema and leisure complex, a medical centre, business units, hotel and spa, backpackers' hostel, shops, car showrooms, business units and more than 700 car parking spaces on the 19.5 acre site. The quarry covers 61 acres in total.

Cllr Martin Burfoot said some residents had raised concerns about traffic, noise, light pollution and fears the development could take trade away from the town centre.

He added: "It is an absolutely massive application. I showed it to a neighbour and he couldn't stop laughing!"

Jo Pickford, speaking for Snitterton Road residents, said: "This application is way and above too large for the site. Although it is a big site this is almost like having a mini town outside Matlock when
the centre needs regenerating."

But David Kerford, director of GKA Planning and Design Limited, agents for the scheme, said the former stone quarry was a unique site and the project would bring employment and visitors to the town.

"We have worked very closely with the local authority to provide all the things Matlock does not have at the moment.

"It is quite a large scale development and one which will support the economic structure of Matlock and provide employment."

Matlock Town Council voted in favour of the outline plans but put forward a list of suggestions for the scheme.

Councillors are expected to vote on April 21.

I am confused - where is Halldale Quarry - is the same development as Cawdor Quarry or is it the one further up the hillside?

this is the greatest idea there has ever been for matlock. the cinema and shops mean that people will no longer have to go to chesterfield or further and so matlock will make quantuple the profits

Take a look at the planning application at DDDC website. There are NO SHOPS proposed for this development as suggested by MM so it will not affect the shops in the town centre.

Its very environmentally friendly application with energy efficient plans and most of the site is proposed to be over 60% managed ecological habitat. The buldings have all been designed with "green" roofs and have been profiled so they have limited visual impact. I really do not see what people have got to moan about in this application

The access is via the new Matlock Spa road near sainsburys NOT Snitterton Road. But of course the Snitterton Road NIMBYs are at it again!!! It's not going to kill the town centre. The town centre masterplan is back on track and a firm has been employed to get this going.

Maltock needs a cinema and bowling complex as proposed in this application. It needs a large medical facility as proposed. It needs a Hotel and Spa as proposed and it deffinately needs the industrial units as proposed for employment.

Bring it on! lets stop living in the pre 1940's era that we are currently in.

I live right next to this quarry and I say, bring it on. This is exactly the kind of development Matlock needs although I fear that the town centre really would become a ghost town once something like this is developed. I suspect there may also be many objections from people on Matlock Bank, overlooking the quarry...
As MaryJane said though, by the time it's implemented i'll probably be 6ft under :(

Ive jsut checked the application online and yes there are no shops proposed. So its not really going to affect the town centre. What is goignt o be built is a hotel, cinema and bowling complex, 2 car showrooms, offices, industrial units and a hospital type development. Now thats not going to affect the town centre.

The town centre needs more shops but im sick of harping on about that now

I also looked at the planning permission in detail when it appeared last week. The scheme looks great, and exactly what this town needs. The hotel outline plan looks superb, enjoying the views over the valley. I don't think it's too far out of town, and plenty of people will be able to walk to the proposed cinema/bowling alley, potentially walking back into town to enjoy a drink or a meal afterwards.

It's also worth noting that it's only an outline planning permission at this stage.

I really hope that the scheme gets the go-ahead, without the delays or compromises that usually surround these sorts of plans.

A message to the District & Town Councils - it seems that there are many people in favour of this scheme, so please consider the wishes of the Matlock residents when you come to consider this planning application.

Matlock with a cinema!?! Hope people actually use this one, unlike The Ritz.

I'm all for new developments in and around the town. My major concerns with any local development are that they don't screw it up, like the nearly completed badly designed apartments (ugly AND a lack of parking) and the "How to waste a £1m on pavements Crown Square exercise".

It also starts to make sense why they never allowed the people access to the Pav who were interested in the Cinema project. Almost like someone knew all along.

Also, what is the facination on here with bowling allies. Sure i like to play a frame every couple of years but people on here go on about it like that's all that everyone does in the Matlock area - play 10 pin bowling. Will demand exist for it after it's built?

what a ridiculous statement Monkey Butler. Its like saying does everyone go swimming in Matlock... No just maybe they don't but the lido makes a profit and stays open because people have different tastes in what leisure activities they take. .So why would people not go bowling or go to the cinema?

And remember its not just the 15000 of Matlock that would use these facilities. Theres also the 5000 in the other part of Matlock i.e. Darley Dale.

Then theres Bakewell, Wirksworth, Tansley and even Buxton
