Children have been left bitterly disappointed by the scrapping of a £36,000 project to resurrect a town's recreation ground.
Council chiefs have pulled the long-awaited scheme for Gorsey Bank in Wirksworth, leaving residents furious.

As the summer holidays kicked off this week Derbyshire County Council announced the funding had been withdrawn due to government spending cuts.

Wirksworth mayor and Gorsey Bank resident Andy Pollock said: "It is just devastating news.

"A big part of bringing Gorsey Bank together as a community was the development of the recreation ground.

"We feel as though this community, that really needed a provision like this, have had the rug pulled from under their feet.

"Gorsey Bank is crying out for some investment."

The funding was awarded to the council via the Playbuilder scheme, which has seen new parks built in Darley Dale and Ashbourne, but the money has been put on ice while the Department for Education reassesses its bank balance.

Resident John Colebourne said he was disappointed by the news.

He added: "I supported the project and my grandchildren would have used it. It was definitely needed as there are a lot of young families in Gorsey Bank."

The town council pledged £14,000 towards the scheme and last year the town's youngsters chose equipment for the planned play area.

Cllr Irene Ratcliffe said she would be appealing to the county and district councils to come up with the funding.

She added: "I really feel for the residents as they have been promised something and have given their time to help bring this together and now it has been taken away from them.

"We are really angry about it, we don't like our children being let down in this way."

A county council spokesman said: "District councils have managed schemes locally and 14 new Playbuilder sites have opened over the last year to be enjoyed by children across the county.

"However, the Government has removed funding from schemes where work has not already started as part of its measures to tackle the national financial deficit."

"This means funding for the Wirksworth scheme is no longer available."

I can understand the disappointment and anger that the funding for this scheme has been cut. I know we, as a Nation, have to get the deficit under control, but the Government just seem to be axing everything without any thought - I would suggest that £36K is probably extremely good value for the benefit the scheme would have brought, a scheme which is/was a long term investment. I know this is old hat by now, but the country's in this mess because of the bankers, maybe some banker out there with a conscience could stump up the £36K out of his million pound bonus - but I don't advise holding your breath!!

Gorsey bank is quite affluent and there are play parks in Wirksworth.
There is a gym , climbing wall, swimming pool .
They also have gardens.
I know it is sad the park cannot be built but day care centres are being closed for the people that have learning disabilities and respite homes are being closed.
We all have to hold in the belt but if it is just for our kids to play across the road then I would go for the respite homes 100%

@ derbyshiregal - I have to say I'm in complete agreement - didn't realise that day care and respite homes were already closing. The worrying thing is that this is just the beginning...but hey...people have got what they voted for!

I wish EVERYONE had got who they voted for instead of the less than 50% majority that is running/bleeding the country now, with another on a leash. CONDEM party ..... so true.

I would suggest D.C.C.could easily find this money from some other source...
The amount they spend on anually improving the massive car park at County Hall for a start(which most employees do not use as it is too far to walk from the far corners of the car park to the main building, when parking in nearby streets offers a shorter walk).
The money that could be saved by switching off the floodlights that illuminate County Hall (just to feed someones ego) at night and also the lights that illuminate the aforementioned car park would easily cover the cash for the play park.
There are lots of projects where money is thrown around aimlessly that could reign in 36K if the powers that be wanted to.

As a former resident of Gorsey Bank i was dissapointed to hear this news. The park has always been in a state of disrepair. To get the community together and plan the park then to be knocked back must have been hard for them. Gorsey Bank is probly the least affluent area in Wirksworth but the residents deserve better than this!
