An historian is tackling the difficult task of collating the history of Matlock Bath Pavilion for a new book to mark the iconic building's centenary.
Matlock Bath Pavilion Group wants to publish an illustrated account of the history of the 1910 building, which it hopes to transform into a multi-use community centre.

Group member Charles Beresford, who published a book about the village in the Great War era, has agreed to spearhead the project, which will raise funds towards the overall seven-figure sum the group needs to achieve its goal.

Mr Beresford said: "Lots of interesting things are coming out and we've some great stories.

"However there are also lots of rumours, like The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix having played there, which may involve a little bit of imagination. But all these things need researching and it's our job to sort the facts from the fiction."

Campaigners have discovered that Lt William J Cowan – who later won a Victorian Cross for bravery and became an acclaimed Hollywood director of films including Oliver Twist – performed a song and dance routine at the Pavilion during the First World War.

He had been visiting the Canadian military hospital at the Royal Hotel, where Gulliver's theme park is now.

Mr Beresford said: "The building celebrates its 100th birthday in July, yet nobody's ever really researched its history.

"We really want people to help by coming forward with their memories, photos and reminisences."

He visited Westminster last week to view the Act of Parliament which granted permission for the Pavilion to be built. The book will include stories about music, romance and Pavilion-goers' memorable experiences – good or bad.

To contribute, contact Mr Beresford at charles@matlockbath.com or 01629 56785.

My memories of the Pavilion are largely of being unable to move due to my feet sticking to the floor. That, of course, and the stimulating conversation one could strike up with many of the Doormen - I had quite an involved chat about Proust and Voltaire one balmy summers eve. Then got punched in the mouth. Fortunately, I was due a new set of dentures the following Monday....

I remember the huge fist fight that followed an evening with Ronnie Corbett in 1982..sorry 1981. I have never seen anyone so drunk as Ronnie that night and id never have thought i would see him hit someone with a chair as i witnessed that night, other than that i have no memories of the pavillion.
