As the snow continues to fall on the Dales, Derbyshire County Council is warning people that grit can only be used on public property.

Anybody caught using grit on private property could be prosecuted – as supplies are for clearing public roads and pavements only.

The authority is also advising people to consider others when clearing ice and snow from driveways by not piling it on pavements.

A spokesman warned: “These piles of ice and snow can make the pavements impassable for pedestrians forcing them to walk in the road. This in turn puts their safety and the safety of other road users at risk.”

If you spot a grit bin that has been vandalised or which has gone missing, or if you know of a grit bin or salt heap which needs filling, contact Derbyshire County Council by texting 86555 or by calling 08456 058058.
