A SMALL calf had to be rescued by firefighters from Matlock after it fell down a mine shaft in a field near Bonsall.

It is believed that the calf was trapped down the 20ft deep shaft for several hours before it was reunited with its mother.

A specialist animal rescue team, based at Matlock fire station, was called to attend the incident on Study Lane, Bonsall.

Crews had to use rope rescue equipment and fixing straps to winch the animal to safety on Monday 13 August.

It took two and a half hours to complete the rescue operation.
