It is congratulations all round this week as the long-awaited new leisure centre for the Dales, and especially Matlock, opens its doors to the public.
Derbyshire Dales District Council is rightly proud of what has been achieved on the Dimple site and now it is down to all of us to use it and enjoy it.
However it is the Matlock Area Recreational and Sports Group which probably deserves the biggest accolade for the opening of the Arc, as the members worked tirelessly over a numb er of years to keep the project on track.
And our own local firm William Twigg also deserves big thanks for a huge financial contribution to the building of the centre.
Barrie Tipping, the chair of MARS has summed up his feelings in a letter on the page opposite.
The Mercury has been to the opening of the complex and there are plenty of pictures and offers for you to enjoy on the following pages.
But what has struck me in the last couple of weeks is how, despite the longing for the new pool, we all have such fond memories of the Lido in its heyday.
On pages 14 and 15 we have a few pictures from yesteryear but they don’t do justice the strength of feeling the town has for the pool in its glory days.
All we can hope is that the new Arc is thought of as fondly by the youth of today and the generations who will enjoy the fantastic facilities in the years to come.
