County’s road collision hot spots revealed

A strech of motorway that runs through Derbyshire has been the home of more traffic collisions than any other road in the county over the last five years, figures reveal.

Statistics have shown that a total of 550 Derbyshire collisions occurred on the M1 between 2009 and 2013, making it the number one accident hot spot in the county.

The well-used motorway is closely followed by the A6, which has seen 404 collisions, and the A61 road, on which 375 collisions have occurred.

However, the figures, which have been uncovered by the Derbyshire Times in a Freedom of Information Act request, also show both the number of collisions and casualties on the county’s roads have reduced in the last five years.

A total of 1655 collisions occurred in the county, excluding Derby City, in 2013, with a total of 2,306 casualties.

Of these collisions, 21 were fatal, 240 were serious and 1,394 were slight, however the number of both casualties and collisions in the county have gone down since 2009.

There were 2,177 collisions recorded by Derbyshire Constabulary in 2009 and 2,974 casualties.

In response to the revealed figures, a spokesman for the Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership said: “We’re glad that the number of people killed or injured on our roads has fallen - but even one casualty is one too many.

“That’s why we’re continuing to work with road-users to make our roads safer.

“Our work programme includes: Speed, seatbelt and mobile phone checks by Derbyshire police, road safety workshops for sixth formers and college students.

“As well as CBT Plus and Bike Safe – cut-price training courses which allow new and qualified motorcyclists to develop their skills, free child car seat checks and drink-drive crackdowns by Derbyshire police.

1: M1 - 550 collisions.

2: A6 - 404 collisions.

3: A61 - 375 collisions.

4: A38 - 308 collisions.

5: A619 - 308 collisions.

6: A632 - 199 collisions.

7: A50 - 185 collisions.

8: A52 - 173 collisions.

9: A515 - 173 collisions.

10: A57 168 collisions.
