A corrupt Derbyshire postal worker tampered with over 3,300 letters and parcels in just one year, the Derbyshire Times can reveal.

The figures, uncovered by a freedom of information request, show from June 2010 to June 2012 four Royal Mail staff were responsibile for withholding 4,323 items of mail - a staggering 3,319 of them by one postie alone.

During the three years one worker was prosecuted and three given formal cautions.

A Royal Mail spokesman said they had a zero tolerance approach to dishonesty and praised the ‘overwhelming majority’ of postmen and women ‘who do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely’.
