A civic leader has spoken out in light of residents’ outrage at the possibility of the new supermarket on Matlock’s Bakewell Road site.
Cllr Lewis Rose, leader of Derbyshire Dales District Council, has explained why members voted in favour of Henry Davidson Developments, which has proposed building a large food store on the central Matlock site.
Speaking on behalf of the council, he said: “It is a fact that, at the moment, food stores are one of few parts of the economy that are profitable.
“That is why four out of five of the potential developers said a food store would probably be needed to ‘anchor’ any development.
“A food store would create the value that enables other parts of a development to take place.”
