Dambuster heroes are honoured in gallery

Servicemen who took part in the Second World War RAF Dambusters’ raid – which involved training at Derwent Reservoir’s Ladybower Dam – have been commemorated with a gallery of pictures.

BBC News joined forces with Dambusters’ enthusiasts to put together the online gallery of the heroes.

The gallery will further mark the 70th anniversary year of the Operation Chastise mission which have been taking place this year.

Following training in Derbyshire’s Derwent Valley, RAF bombers broke two large dams in the Ruhr Valley, Germany, on May 16, 1943, with bouncing bombs with the aim of flooding numerous factories.

David Robertson, chairman of the 617 Squadron Association, said it is a fitting commemoration of the men whose skill, courage, determination and airmanship has gone down in the annals of air warfare.
