Derbyshire Police says burglaries of this kind tend to increase during the summer months as people spend more time in their gardens. A variety of crime prevention initiatives will be taking place across the county where officers will be giving advice to the public on how to secure their property.

Detective Chief Inspector Julian Wilson, of Chesterfield CID, said: “We would like to remind all residents to secure their sheds and out buildings.

“A way to try and prevent this would be to invest in a padlock or shed alarm and to use reverse hinges with bolts where the fastening mechanism is on the inside.”
