A RUNNER is due to pound the pavements of London next month in a bid to raise £1,500 in memory of his grandmother.

Dom Stevens, who grew up in Matlock and is the son of town and district councillor Geoff Stevens, is due to compete in next month’s London Marathon for the Alzheimer’s Society.

The 35-year-old explained: “I decided to run for the Alzheimer’s Society because of the memories of my grandma, Florence Stevens – a Matlock resident – and the difficulties she experienced with dementia in later life.

“It was a tough experience to understand as a 13-year-old boy, why someone you really loved and cared for didn’t recognise you any more.

“We have also recently had another close family member diagnosed and as a family are coming to terms with not only the effect this has on the individual but the pressures this puts on both family and friends on a day to day basis.”
