DT and JE James Flagg Challenge was a huge success

Riders took on 55, 25 and 10 mile rides on Sunday, July 27, to raise thousands of pounds for the charity on Ashgate Road, at Old Brampton, Chesterfield.

The event rolled out from the hospice from 9am and cyclists battled steep climbs including Sheldon and Birchover as they completed routes around the beautiful Peak District countryside.

Derbyshire Times editor Graeme Huston, who was a marshal-rider, said: “It was wonderful. High praise goes to all those amazing cyclists, marshals and volunteers who turned out to make this event such a great success by supporting the hospice.

“The spirit, courage and camaraderie from everyone involved shone throughout the day.”

Team turn-outs including Andy Moore Racing and the Bolsover cycling club who wasted no time at the head of the field and soon stormed round the 55miler.

Brave efforts by independent entries Ian Parsons, of Middlecroft, Matt Randle and Michael Tuck captured the brave spirit of the day as they endured the 55 mile event’s steep climbs and gruelling route.

Assistant manager Mick Burr, of JE James Cycles, Chesterfield, and colleague Steve were on hand throughout at feed stations handing out free gels, bananas and drinks as marshals kept riders on route.

Mick said: “Everything went very well and it was a great to be able to help everyone out and keep them well-fuelled.”

Following the event riders also received a well-earned, free Derbyshire Times and a soup-and-a-roll.
