Flooding in Derbyshire left a trail of destruction and chaos

North Derbyshire and the Peak District was hit by a terrible flash downpour leaving roads awash with deep water as some homes suffered extensive flooding.

The downpour struck about midday, on Monday, and two homes on Staveley Road, Duckmanton, near the Arkwright Arms pub were severely flooded and parents were warned to collect children from Hady Primary School, Chesterfield, as a route from the school became swamped.

Motorists also faced flooded roads in the valley near the Arkwright Arms, at Duckmanton, and in Bakewell and in Matlock Bath and drivers on the M1 faced poor visibility and aqua-planing dangers as the skies opened up.

Pensioner Marjorie Coupe, of Staveley Road, Duckmanton, suffered extensive flooding to her home and potentially thousands of pounds of damage.

She said: “I got so worked up and my friends and I had to go into top gear and try to get things safely out of the way. If people hadn’t helped I would have suffered a great deal more.”

Firefighters were called out to pump out homes including those on Staveley Road and were also called out to Hady Primary School to help drain the surrounding routes to and from the school which is notorious for flooding.

The Met Office had given a yellow warning for heavy rain across the East Midlands on Monday but conditions improved by the evening.

Rain was forecast for the rest of the week with some sunshine expected as the weekend approaches.
