Are these the tallest sunflowers in Bakewell?

They measure 11ft 2in and have been grown by Kay Bown in the garden of her home on Stoney Close.

And she’s laying down the challenge to Mercury readers to find a taller sunflower in the area.

Kay Bown said: “My daughter was reading the newspaper on Friday, and there was a story about a little lad who’d grown a sunflower that was ten feet high.

“She told me, and I thought, ‘Mine are taller than that’. I think they might be the tallest sunflowers in Bakewell.”

Is Kay right? Does she have the tallest sunflowers in Bakewell, or even the whole of the Derbyshire Dales?

However, Kay has some way to go to beat the world record.

According to Guinness World Records, the tallest sunflower to date measured 26ft 4in in August 2009, and was grown by Hans-Peter Schiffer in Germany.
