Footballer on film mystery

I am the footballer in the picture (Memory Lane, Thursday, June 30) I think it was around 1981.

I am being interviewed by the BBC at the playing fields at the top of Cavendish Road.

I helped to set up a football team, called Christians United, to play in the local league. The team was comprised of young men, mainly from the local churches in Matlock and district.

The publicity arose because the Football Association in London refused to allow us to advertise our Christian belief on our shirts.

After some national press coverage the BBC sent their cameras. They filmed nearly a whole day, including our match, which was ironically Christians against the Lions (Darley Dale).

A short screening occurred on the BBC Religious programme, introduced by the Match of the Day theme tune.

The football team continued for many years.

Thanks for the memory. I am still in contact with several of the players.
