A new NHS initiative to improve access to rehabilitation therapies for elderly people in care homes in Derbyshire has scooped its third award in two months.

Members of the Care Home Support Team from Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Trust have been named winners in a national search for the best new ideas in primary care, in a Liberating Ideas competition run by the Health Service Journal and Cap Gemini (healthcare consulting organisation).

The Care Home Support Team- including occupational therapists, physiotherapists and specialist support workers- began as a pilot project in one care home in 2009 and now covers 29 local care homes across Derbyshire. The pilot project successfully reduced falls and hospital admissions by 60 per cent among frail, elderly patients and helped to improve their sense of wellbeing and confidence.

Sam Pessoll, team leader for the Care Home Support Team based at Babington Hospital, Belper, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for us and we are delighted that we’ve been able to introduce a service which is making a real difference to the quality of life of elderly people in care homes in Derbyshire.”
