Votes flooded in to decide on the next six Derbyshire County Council blue plaques.

The worthy winners have been announced. They area gardener William Barron, engineer Henry Royce, Samuel Slater – father of the American industrial revolution, ‘the man who made Matlock’ – John Smedley, writer Alison Uttley and engineer Joseph Whitworth.

Work is now under way to find locations for the plaques.

County council leader Andrew Lewer said “The county has a magnificent past, with many of the county’s famous sons and daughters truly making history.

“I look forward to paying tribute to them by unveiling the new plaques.”
